The Gap Between Knowing and Being

You've read the books. You know what you should do. But there's a gap between knowing and being—and that gap is costing you.

You've read the leadership books, but you're not consistently showing up as the leader you know you can be.

You're successful by external measures—the title, the income, the respect—but something's still missing.

You know what you should do (be more patient, delegate better, prioritize what matters), but old patterns keep pulling you back.

You want more than success. You want fulfillment. You want a life designed with intention, not lived by default.

That gap? It's not a character flaw. It's a thinking problem. And thinking problems have thinking solutions.

Change Your Story, Change Your Life

The foundation of my coaching is simple but profound: our perceptions are stories, not reality.

Psychology and neuroscience tell us that we don't see the world as it "really is." We interpret reality through mental processes shaped by our experiences, beliefs, and assumptions. These stories drive our emotions, decisions, and actions, often unconsciously. That's what we call living life by default.

When you identify the stories behind your behaviors, you can decide if they're true and if they're not serving you, you can change them. That is living life by design.

I know you're probably thinking that sounds too simple. That's not the way it really works. Life's more complicated than that. But science and experience tell us otherwise.

Using a process of inquiry, reflection, and research-backed frameworks, we'll work together to:

  • Identify the limiting narratives holding you back
  • Build alignment between your vision, your purpose, and your daily actions
  • Create new possibilities for how you show up in the world

This isn't mystical. It's grounded in behavioral science, neuroscience, and philosophy. And it works.

Live by design, not default.

Choose Your Path

I offer two styles of coaching, depending on where you are and what you need.

Life Coaching

Design a Life That Brings Purpose and Fulfillment

Who it's for:

Anyone seeking clarity on their future and how to live intentionally.

The approach:

Together, we'll answer three fundamental questions that create the foundation for a fulfilling life:

  1. 1
WHERE do you want to go?

We'll create a vision for your future—mapping out three possible futures so you can choose the one that resonates most.

  2. 2
HOW do you want to get there?

We'll define your purpose—the engine that drives you forward. This comes from exploring your passion, your anger (what you want to change), and your talents.

  3. 3
WHO do you want to be?

We'll clarify how you want to show up in the world. You'll create identity declarations that guide your decisions and actions.

The outcome: A clear structure and rubric for decision-making that guides you toward your most fulfilling life.

Executive Coaching

Achieve Specific Professional Goals with Measurable Outcomes

Who it's for:

Leaders and professionals seeking greater effectiveness in their careers.

The approach:

This is a targeted process with clear objectives:

  • We'll identify specific opportunities to be more effective in your role
  • If helpful, we can conduct an informal 360 survey with your stakeholders to gather feedback
  • We'll uncover the limiting beliefs and habits affecting your performance
  • We'll create an action plan to help you reach your career aspirations

The outcome: Enhanced leadership presence, improved work relationships, and measurable progress toward your professional goals.

About Craig

Craig Dickerson

I've spent more than twenty years helping people and organizations learn, change, and transform, always with the same through-line: better thinking leads to better lives.

I'm an academic practitioner. I mix research-backed frameworks from behavioral science and leadership with ideas from philosophy and theology. I spent twelve years at Harvard Business Impact (formerly Harvard Business Publishing Corporate Learning), most recently as a principal learning partner, designing leadership programs for Fortune 100 clients across the Americas and Europe. Before that I spent six years in Deloitte's Human Capital practice doing strategy and change work.

Today I coach leaders and individuals one-to-one through Dickerson Coaching (since 2019). I also lead Fithian, a boutique advisory for organizations that want to transform. Same person. Two doors. Coaching is where we close the gap between who you are and who you want to be. Fithian is where we diagnose and fix how a business actually runs, and bring AI in only where it earns its place.

The two things that keep most people from greater satisfaction and fulfillment:

  1. Lack of a clear vision for the life they want
  2. Limiting thoughts and habits that keep them from evolving

I use inquiry, reflection, and discernment to help you work through those obstacles and create new possibilities.

Education & Credentials

  • • Bachelor of Science, Management / Finance, Purdue University (Krannert)
  • • Master of Arts in Education, Organizational Learning, Performance and Change, Colorado State University
  • • Executive and life coach (Dickerson Coaching; practice since 2019)
  • • Pursuing ICF ACC credentialing through the Center for Executive Coaching

All coaching is remote via Zoom or Teams, nationwide.

I live in the Salt Lake City metro area with my wife and our dog Putney, finding joy in the mountains and desert through hiking, biking, and skiing.

Looking for help with the business itself, not only the leader?

That's Fithian: diagnosis-first advisory for SMBs. Same Craig. Different door.

What to Expect from Coaching

Coaching is a collaborative relationship built on trust, honesty, and action.

What You Can Expect from Me

  • A confidential, one-on-one relationship that motivates and inspires intentional action
  • Feedback on your current behaviors and patterns, delivered with candor and care
  • A safe space to practice dealing with difficult challenges before applying them in real life
  • Research-backed frameworks combined with timeless philosophical wisdom
  • Insights that improve your relationships, decisions, and overall effectiveness
  • Support in discovering (or reconnecting with) your life purpose and core values

The coaching process is inquiry-based, not advice-giving. You retain full ownership of your life—you set the agenda and make the choices. My role is to ask the questions that help you see more clearly.

What I Expect from You

  • Openness to exploring new ways of thinking and behaving
  • Willingness to do the work needed to reach your goals
  • Honesty about how you're feeling—about coaching, your challenges, and your progress
  • Courage to take action and try new approaches (even when it feels uncomfortable)
  • Discipline to keep appointments and honor commitments
  • Full ownership of your life: you set the tone and make the choices that will take you where you want to go

Change is simple, but not always easy. If you're ready to do the work, I'm ready to walk alongside you.
